At Wags and Whiskers Veterinary Services in Central Illinois, vaccinations are one of the most critical aspects of pet care. They are crucial in ensuring your furry companions live long, healthy lives. As we observe August as National Pet Immunization awareness, it is the perfect time to dive into the basics of pet vaccinations, why they are essential, and how they benefit your pets.

Why Vaccinations Are a Game-Changer for Pet Health

1. Shielding Your Pet from Harmful Illnesses

Vaccines are powerful tools in preventing severe pet illnesses. They act as a shield, protecting your pet from diseases that can otherwise be life-threatening.

2. Avoiding Expensive Treatments

Vaccinations can prevent hefty medical bills associated with treating diseases that vaccines could have prevented.

3. Stopping the Spread of Zoonotic Diseases

Some diseases can be transmitted from animals to humans, such as rabies and leptospirosis. Vaccinations help prevent these zoonotic diseases, keeping both pets and people safe.

4. Guarding Against Wildlife-Borne Threats

Diseases like rabies and distemper, which are common in wildlife, can pose risks to unvaccinated pets. Vaccinations offer a crucial line of defense.

5. Meeting Legal Requirements

Illinois law states that pet owners are required to vaccinate their dogs and cats for rabies. Here is a brief statement from the Illinois Department of Agriculture:

Rabies Awareness

“Rabies is a fatal zoonotic, neurologic disease. In September 2021, Illinois reported the first human case and death within the state from rabies since 1954 after a rabid bat bit a person and did not receive prophylaxis.

“The canine strain of rabies has been eradicated in the US due to vaccination practices. However, the risk of re-introduction is present as a result of importation of animals from countries where the strain remains prevalent. Strains circulating in bats, raccoons, skunks, and other species are still found within the US. Therefore, we all must remain vigilant and comply with the laws regarding Rabies vaccination, quarantine and testing in Illinois. All cats and dogs over the age of 16 weeks are required to be vaccinated with an approved product and this must be administered by a licensed veterinarian.”

Essential Vaccinations for Puppies and Kittens

Young animals have immature immune systems and are highly vulnerable to infectious diseases. They initially receive antibodies through their mother’s milk, but this protection wanes over time. A series of vaccinations helps ensure that puppies and kittens receive adequate protection as maternal antibodies diminish. Each vaccine dose primes and strengthens their immune system for long-lasting defense.

Why Following Your Pet’s Vaccination Schedule Matters

An incomplete vaccination series can leave puppies and kittens vulnerable to infections. Following the recommended vaccination schedule is essential to protect your pet completely.

Which Vaccines Does Your Pet Need?

Core Vaccines

These are essential for all pets based on their risk of exposure, disease severity, and transmissibility to humans. They protect against the most common and severe diseases in your area. For example, the rabies vaccine is a core vaccine.

Non-Core Vaccines

Non-core vaccines are optional and tailored to individual pets based on their unique risk factors, such as exposure risk due to lifestyle or travel. We will assess these factors to recommend the best vaccination plan for your pet. For example, you can vaccinate your dog to protect them from Bordetella (kennel cough). You are not required to vaccinate your dog for Bordetella. However, we often recommend it for dogs that frequently interact with other dogs, such as those that attend dog parks, boarding facilities, or doggy daycare. When you bring your pup to Wags and Whiskers Veterinary Service for vaccinations, consult with Dr. Janelle McFarland to determine the best vaccination plan for your pet’s specific needs and lifestyle.

How Often Should Your Pet Be Vaccinated?

The frequency of vaccinations varies. Some vaccines protect for several years, while others may require more frequent administration. Dr. Janelle McFarland will design a vaccination schedule tailored to your pet’s needs.

Spotting and Handling Vaccination Side Effects

Mild side effects from vaccinations in pets are relatively common and usually temporary. Some of these include:

Slight Fever: A mild increase in body temperature that typically resolves on its own.

Localized Swelling or Redness: At the injection site, pets may develop a small lump or redness that usually disappears within a few days.

Lethargy: Pets might appear a bit tired or less energetic for a day or two after the vaccination.

Decreased Appetite: Some pets may eat less or have a reduced appetite temporarily.

Mild Digestive Upset: Occasionally, pets might experience mild gastrointestinal symptoms like a soft stool or mild diarrhea.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If symptoms persist or your pet shows signs of a severe reaction, such as persistent vomiting, hives, or difficulty breathing, contact Wags and Whiskers Veterinary Services immediately or an emergency veterinarian if we are closed. Also, it is critical you inform us of any previous vaccine reactions when scheduling your pet for any new or booster vaccinations.
